What is SPC

SPC is a method of monitoring a process during its operation in order to control the quality of products while they are being produced.
It involves gathering information about the product, or the process itself. This is done in order to identify special causes of variation and other non-normal processing conditions, thus bringing the process “ under statistical control” and reducing variation.
Statistical monitoring charts, including Shewart Chart, are commonly used, but other techniques are being introduced as well
Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing and interpreting data for the purpose of making better decision
All process and systems exhibit variation, and one of the most important aspects of managing Quality are the management and reduction of variation.
What time did you reach your office every day? There is no simple way to answer this with a single time. You may reach usually say. 8.55 AM. But if you were to measure it every day, you would get a whole lot of different times. Quite a few of them may be 8.40 AM to 9.00 AM
Acknowledging and understanding variation is the fundamental aspects of quality concept. Variation is an important consideration in the quality, because more the things vary, the less we can be sure that our customers’ expectations are met.
We know that things will vary, yet we have to constantly work for reducing variation, so that our products and services become more consistent.
Statistics is the language of variation and everyone needs the have grasp of basics.
Common Causes :- These are random causes of variation, which are natural part of the system. Bringing changes in the system can change variation due to common cause.
Special Causes:- These causes are due to special circumstances that are not normally part of the system. They can usually be identified and fixed without changing the system
Man (people) – everybody does things differently.
Machines – using different machines – even different individual machines of the same model – might produce different results.
Method – different training emphasizes different things.
Materials – different materials (paper clips vs. large binder clips) produce different results.
Mother Nature (Environment) – differences in temperature, humidity, etc., can affect results.
Measurement system – the more accurate and precise the measurement tools the smaller the range of variation

What is Six Sigma 

You may have heard a rumor, or you may have read something in
the company newsletter about Black Belt training. You probably thought, “What do martial arts have to do with my job?” Later, during a department meeting, you learned that your group would be part of a companywide effort (every division!) to implement Six Sigma.

Your boss also asked for volunteers to be Black Belts. “What is all this about?” you wondered.

A couple of weeks later, everyone in your division was invited to a big kick-off meeting. Lots of slides were shown, and the company president spoke, mentioning GE, Motorola, and one of your company’s bigcompetitors. Examples of Six Sigma and how it could help your division/ company save money and make customers happier were given. One speaker said that if it could get from 3 sigma to 4 sigma, your division would save $100 million! 100 million? Was he out of his mind? Your head was reeling. Was Six Sigma a new flavor-of-the-month program? Could it really save so much money? “What is this thing called Six Sigma?” you thought. “Is there something in it for me? Is it something to worry about?” Over the past few years, more and more employees of companies that have adopted Six Sigma have asked themselves these kinds of questions. A few of these employees have become Black Belts; others have taken on other roles in this dramatic process of organizational change and renewal. For many employees, the transformation has been both personal and professional.

I never dreamed senior management was really going to support our recommendations. But with Six Sigma, and the data we had to back up our project, they  had no choice.
